The organization brings people together every year to celebrate freedom, teach African American history and create space for the community to connect. They needed a website that felt like that. Not flat. Not buried under event details. Something with energy.
My Approach
I built the structure around the way people actually use a community event site. Some visitors come for tickets. Some want to understand the history. Some are sponsors, press or volunteers. The navigation had to give each group a clear path without making the homepage feel overloaded. Visually, I kept the site bold and celebratory: strong images, big section breaks, deep color and clear calls to action. Under the surface, I set it up so the organization can keep growing the site year after year.
Key Features
Annual Experience Pages — Current and past celebrations are organized as experiences, giving each year room for event details, recap content and community context.
Mission & History Sections — Dedicated pages explain the organization’s purpose, Juneteenth history, leadership and community role without burying that content inside event promotion.
Featured Books Area — A visible section for selected books, connecting the celebration back to education, reading and cultural memory.
Sponsor Visibility — Sponsor logos and partner sections are placed with intention, giving supporters proper recognition without cluttering the design.
Press & Updates Structure — Press coverage, announcements and community updates have their own space, so important content does not disappear after the event.
Clear Engagement Paths — Calls to action for tickets, sponsors, volunteers and community connection are placed throughout the site where they naturally make sense.
Flexible WordPress Setup — The site can keep growing with new events, sponsors, updates and recap pages without needing the whole structure rebuilt.
The Result
The website now feels like a real digital home for Spartanburg Juneteenth. Visitors can understand the mission, explore events, see sponsor support, browse featured books and connect with the organization without having to dig. More importantly, the team has a structure they can keep using as the celebration grows. The site feels more alive now. More organized. More in step with the scale of the work.
