YMCA of Greater Spartanburg
The YMCA of Greater Spartanburg has a lot happening at once. Memberships, youth sports, swim lessons, summer camp, group exercise, pool schedules, community events, donations, volunteering and multiple branches. The website needed to help people find the right path without feeling buried in options.
The Brief
The site had to serve families, members, donors, volunteers, job seekers and people looking for programs across multiple YMCA locations. That meant the content structure mattered more than decoration. Visitors needed quick access to programs, schedules, membership, donations, locations and registration. The site also had to reflect the YMCA’s larger mission around youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
My Approach
I built the experience around action paths. Someone visiting the site usually has a task: join, register, check a schedule, find a location, donate, volunteer or learn about a program. I kept those routes visible and repeated them where they made sense. The homepage balances mission and utility, with program cards, location links, membership messaging and community involvement calls to action. The challenge was giving a large organization room to speak without making the site feel like a directory.
Key Features
Program Navigation — Afterschool care, summer programs, youth sports, adult sports, swim lessons, LIVESTRONG and community events are grouped for easier discovery.
Membership and Join CTAs — Membership paths are placed clearly so visitors can move from interest to action without searching.
Multi-Location Access — Branch links and location content make it easier for users to find the YMCA closest to them.
Schedule Paths — Group exercise, pool, gym and program schedules have direct navigation because returning members need fast access.
Donation and Volunteer Routes — Support options are built into the experience so community involvement is visible, not hidden in the footer.
Mission-Led Homepage — The site introduces the YMCA’s community role while still keeping practical actions front and center.
Event and Campaign Sections — Seasonal promotions, summer camp registration and giving campaigns have room to appear without disrupting the main structure.
The Result
The finished site gives the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg a clearer digital home for a very broad audience. It supports the everyday needs of members while still making space for the organization’s mission and community impact.
The site now works as both a program guide and an entry point into the Y. Families can find activities. Members can check schedules. Donors can give. New visitors can understand what the organization offers and why it matters.
